6 Months: 1st Day in Nanjing

The weather was cool. About 18 degree C indoors. We had Andre dressed up in a long sleeve romper, long socks, sweater and pants. Phew! It’s so hard to change for him nowadays cos the energy packed boy just love to twist. You need to do diaper/clothes change at lightning speed! And Andre will ‘scold’ you, if you hold him down for too long.

We just stayed indoors today. Yesterday’s trip was too exhausting and we just wanted to keep activities low profile today.

Andre checking out his new playmat. It is loaned from 姑爸爸's nephew. And 姑爸爸's nephew is 17 years old now. Hmm, I wonder how old is the mat now…. But it’s clean, it’s functional, perfect for Andre to perform his gym tricks =) Andre has a new friend too. 小牛。Andre’s zodiac is the cow, so I guess naturally he felt a natural affinity to the toy? Haha .. see they have the same expression. More of Andre’s and 小牛's adventures to come.

Wrestling with Dad. We really had a good time. With so many people looking after Andre, we finally have solid time to play with him. Something that I have been yearning for so long, yet unable to do so at home as we are always so occupied with the chores.

Andre checking out his new pig sty. Keke. 奶奶 loaned this from a friend and stuffed it with the warmest quilt and softest pillows. I would say this bed is even more comfortable than at home.

6 Months: Let's go to Nanjing, 南京。爸爸的老家。

Andre's 1st air tickets and passport
Andre is all dressed up, and says goodbye to his musical bear bear (By the way, mummy bought this during a business trip to Houston 2 years back; It was for the future baby =)). Andre looks like Tigger isn’t it, but it is a Polo Ralph sleepsuit. Thank you Uncle Gurmit! We departed the house at 8.30 am for our 11 am flight.

All the baggage. The packing and coordination was crazy.. but of course, under mummy’s execution, we got everything packed and arranged in time. 4 bottles of EBM all ice packed to be brought on board, medicine, feeding equipment, pump etc...

The airport check in took more than 40 mins cos the airline did not arrange our pre-booked bassinet seat. Andre was under a child ticket and had a seat to himself. But well, we insisted on the bassinet instead.

Boarded the plane at 10.30am. Andre’s first plane ride is on a Boeing 747 on Cathay Pacific. The leg room was fantastic. We were advise to let baby drink his milk when the airplane takes off, cos the swallowing action would help regulate the air pressure in his ears. Mistake no. 1, we let Andre take the milk once the airplane started to reverse out to the runway. Who knows, the plane took such a long time to to get to the runway that Andre finished the milk before the plane took off! &^%%$*&!! LOL, we should have known earlier la, cos Kevin and I have taken numerous plane rides before. Anyway, baby fell asleep and we gave him the pacifier instead, tugging it occasionally so that he'll suckle.

Upon cruising, we got the bassinet thinking we could get our hands free. Mistake no. 2. Andre wailed the moment we put him into it. He woke up from his power nap, bright and awake, ready to conquer the plane. Sigh..

Andre was good for the bulk of the flight, like an octopus. He did not like being restrained and was screaming when we held him down. In the end, we had to take turns to carry him at the pantry cos that's the only way to stop him from screaming. Now I fully empathize those parents with children. It is really quite embarrassing. At one point, i carried him (8kg), balancing with my 4 inches heels for 45 mins before he finally fell asleep.

It was the 1st plane ride where mummy did not enjoy the free flow of beer and gulped down the food in the fastest time. Unfortunately, the weather at HK was terrible, and we landed an hour later. But the last leg, where we all had to be buckled up, Andre was good. While mummy cooed gently into Andre’s ears, we watched the plane descend from 6000 ft to 1000 ft only to abandon landing as another plane couldn’t clear the runway in time. There was another 2 attempted landings before we landed safely in torrential weather conditions. Good job son! Thank God too!

Mummy managed to gather 90 HKD from our previous trips. And so we indulged in this bowl of sharks fins porridge, char siew chee cheong fun, and soya milk. Hehe, Only HKD$64. See the fins..keke.

Our original connection flight was suppose to depart at 6.35pm, but due to the bad weather, all flights were delayed and we were rescheduled to board at 8.05pm. During the connection time, we fed Andre and he slept in the Bjorn for more than an hour. I wanted to find the Disney store so desperately (cos i promised Andre that i'll bring him there) but the HK airport is so freaking big and they changed the location of the store. Well, i did my best. I walked with baby in the carrier for 30 mins.

We did not board till 8.30pm. By then, mummy was all tired and grouchy. Luckily, daddy took over and mummy managed to have some shut-eye. The plane finally took off at 9.30pm. Surprisingly, Dragon air offered pretty good food. But after a long day out, who would bother to take pictures.

Reached Nanjing at 11.30pm. 姑爸爸 waited for almost 3 hours for us at the airport. 姑妈妈 has earlier departed from the airport to guangzhou for a weeks trip. We got into the car and reached 奶奶's place finally at 1am.

Andre was a little green, tired and feeble from the whole journey. We did not manage to feed him any solids, plus the milk strike a couple of days back. But well, the endearing boy still performed some flips, pulled himself to a standing position at his cot and grinned at his 奶奶,爷爷, 姑爸爸. I could see that they are so proud and happy to see him. It was a family reunion, the welcoming of a long awaited new member into the family, the family warmth of joy and bliss... And for this priceless moment, it was all that made the long journey out truly worthed it.

Baby was bathed and put to bed. At 2 am, mummy started pumping (missed the planned session at 11pm, while she recap the day's happenings with daddy.

6 Months: April 18 - April 28

Not much updates for these 2 weeks, no pictures taken :(

Things got busy at work for mummy (this is the downside of a working mum's life) and mummy got the flu bug from both Andre and daddy. And it is many times worst. For once, 3 days of MC! Though there wasn't any fever, i started to be so phelgmy and i started losing my voice.

Visited the Dr 3 times, 22nd April, 25th April and 28th April.

1st visit: Symptoms are relatively mild. So given cough mixture and cold tablets.

2nd visit: I've started wheezing and my ears were so painfully blocked that i lost much of my hearing. I just felt i was so clogged up in my whole respiratory system. Was put on the neubilizer (hey, i thought that was for babies only, but apparently, it was very good and it cleared my airways). I did some puff test but was unable to generate enough air. Given 2 days MC. Dr says if i don't recover enough on a review on Wed, i will not be fit enough to fly. OH NO!!

Rested Monday at home 26th. Put baby at mum's place so that i could have some peace and quiet. However,i felt better in the afternoon and ended up doing housework for the whole house. Sigh.. what to do, Aunty Ted has already left, and our place is getting so terribly messy. I did feel much better in the evening, Kevin said i finally sounded normal and thus decided to return back to work on Tuesday. (at the back of my head, i was also considering the long leave i have ahead and thus want to minimize my time away)

Tuesday: Bad choice to go back to work. Cos i was coughing away and i was so embarrassed. I still do sound bad. And there is a pregnant mummy in the office now.

Wednesday: 3rd visit to Dr Chang. I fared much better with the puff test. I was given more medicine and certified fit to fly. Dr says its a bad case of upper respiratory infection and was given a nasal respirator for me to take on board my vacation. Whoa... this is serious manz, cos i thought this gadget is only used by the asthmatic. Took one more day MC.

For the past week, tried to keep away from Andre as much as possible. Things will get serious and complicated if i pass the germs back to Andre. Downside of the antibiotics was that, i think my milk tasted really bad, and Andre went on a milk strike for a few days. Haiz...

6 Months: Updates

Time Flies. Before i even realized it, it has been 3 weeks since i last updated this blog. And many things has changed. I really need to back post what i missed.

Andre has learnt to stand by himself :0 pretty astounding for a 6 month.

He's also getting more aware of his surroundings and to strangers. On Saturday, we were at Adel's place for Victoria's 1st birthday party. Although he allowed 99% of the people to carry him, he was pretty wary when daddy and mummy disappeared from sight. I thought he would be so used to having people around, with all his little cousins surrounding him, but the little boy clinged onto me tightly that evening. I put him on the floor to crawl, he was wary and kept coming back to me. It didn't help when little Vic clawed him across the face. Can see that he's on the verge of crying, just that he was REN-ning.. There was this monkey balloon. Typically, Andre will not hesitate to grab and put in his mouth. But that evening, he just stared. I took monkey and made cukooing noises. Andre found it funny and started to chuckle. Slowly, Andre warmed up and started playing with the monkey. Even Kevin also noticed the personality change, and we try to encourage him to socialise a bit more. He's really unlike the usual KINGLY behaviour he displays at home, screeching and grinning widely for our attention. Well, wary to strangers is also a development milestone. It typically happens to 90% of the babies at 10 months. Again, our son has developed faster than others.

This morning, after bath, there was some time before we need to leave for work. I left Andre on the floor. Gave him a chance to explore besides the perimeters of his cot. He crawled an inch, turned back and look at mama, watching my facial expression and if i'm still around. Then he crawled another inch and repeated the same thing. He did this a few more times before he finally reached his initial target, the socks drawer. Ah ... what an interesting playbox. Slowly, he pulled out sock by sock, examining each one like a curious explorer. Mummy is so glad that Andre is starting to find his way around. I am sooo proud of my son.

6 Months: Outing to Orchard Road

Mummy wanted to buy the foogoo thermos food container and realized that Robinson’s is having a BIG discount. Usual price is $50, but now they are having a 20% + 10% discount. On top of that, Robinsion’s card members get another 5% rebate. Make it only about $30. On top of this, mummy also bought a Pigeon porridge maker to make porridge. Just fill the container with a little rice and the intended amount of water and put it in the centre of your rice cooker while you cook your rice, you’ll get some piping hot baby porridge. =)
At Robinsons. I like this outlet so much more than the one at Raffles City. More varieties of things, the children section is huge and items are more often in stock here.
Baby Andre at Orchard Road
End of the day, cheeky and contented.

6 Months: Breakfast at Swensons

Andre just found a new trick. He can kneel at his cot.
Me and my big green balloon
at the high chair
Yummy Breakfast!

6 Months: KKH Children's Surgery Centre

We’re at the KKH Children’s Surgery Centre. I won’t disclose publicly why we are here today but just to reveal, it’s a consideration for Andre’s UTI issue 2 months back. Met with Dr Yap Te Lu, Senior Pediatric Surgeon. She’s nice! Nicest among all of Andre’s Drs so far. We were advised to postpone our intended procedure till later. However, during her investigation, she had further observations! Haiz… seems like the more check ups you do, the more issues you’ll find. I think there is a point where we have to say no to these recommendations and suggestions. My child is well, there is really no need to make him perfect. Since he is still growing, I’m pretty sure he’ll outgrow many of these issues to a perfectly normal happy adult.

6 Months: Trying to stand?

Came into the room one day and found Andre in this half standing position, hugging the rails of his cot. Is it time to stand? Hmm… not very possible leh. Moreover, he just learnt how to sit like only 2 weeks back? The elderly says 七坐,八爬,九发牙。 So shouldn’t Andre be like standing at 10 months?

6 Months: Daddy is not home this evening

Daddy has a Gucci launch dinner to go tonight at the RWS. So mummy is activated again tonight. After hastily dropping us off at 7, daddy donned his suit and left our house.
Baby Andre is very cooperative. After his bath, he sat on his rocker and watch Baby Mozart while mummy slowly ate her dinner.
Then it’s Reading time…
Then it’s Music time…
With mummy around, you can be assured of intensive ongoing lessons. If it’s daddy, then baby will be left in the cot for “self-discovery” time.

6 Months: Another lazy sunday afternoon

Daddy is down with the flu bug today. Probably got it from Andre’s coughing from the past few days. So we decided to quarantine daddy from the baby for these few days. We have to make sure that Andre stays well for the trip to China. Luckily, its Sunday, and we have Aunty Ted over to help out. Otherwise, mummy sure won’t be able to cope with housework, pumping, feeding and baby watching.
Bull dozing
Andre’s new BFF, the Friso bear bear. It’s a good size for him to hug, play, BAM and chew. Talk about sharing the love.
Andre’s actually sleeping in this picture, but somehow he opened his eyes for a little photo taking.
Dunno why, but Andre kept sticking out his tongue. Maybe the weather’s hot
Here’s another one..

6 Months: Reading

Its a Touch and Feel book. Andre likes to feel the fur on the rabbit.

These are the 2nd batches of books mummy borrowed from the library. Andre did not show an immediate interest in them. However he gotten better with them since. He particularly enjoys the touch and feel books as they have different textures like fur, cloth, cardboard that creates a sensory experience for him.

A lot of people commented on me why am I starting my child so early on books. An infant won’t understand everything you’re doing or why. But you wouldn’t wait until your child could understand what you were saying before you start speaking to him, right? And you wouldn’t bypass lullabies until your baby could carry a tune or wait until he or she could shake a rattle before you offered any toys.
Reading aloud:
1. Teaches baby about communication
2. Introduces concepts such as stories, numbers, letters, colors, and shapes in a fun way
3. Builds listening, memory and vocabulary skills
4. Gives babies information about the world around them

Believe it or not, by the time babies reach their first birthday they will have learned all the sounds needed to speak their native language. The more stories you read aloud, the more words your child will be exposed to and the better he or she will be able to talk. Hearing words helps to build a rich network of words in a baby's brain. Kids whose parents frequently talk/read to them know more words by age 2 than children who have not been read to. And kids who are read to during their early years are more likely to learn to read at the right time.
When reading, your child hears you using many different emotions and expressive sounds, which fosters social and emotional development. Reading also invites your baby to look, point, touch, and answer questions — all of which promote social development and thinking skills. And your baby improves language skills by imitating sounds, recognizing pictures, and learning words.
But perhaps the most important reason to read aloud is that it makes a connection between the things your baby loves the most — your voice and closeness to you — and books. Spending time reading to your baby shows that reading is a skill worth learning.
Different Ages, Different Stages
Young babies may not know what the pictures in a book mean, but they can focus on them, especially faces, bright colors, and contrasting patterns. Read or sing lullabies and nursery rhymes to interest and soothe your infant.

Between 4 and 6 months, your baby may begin to show more interest in books. He or she will grab and hold books, but will mouth, chew, and drop them as well. Choose sturdy vinyl or cloth books with bright colors and repetitive or rhyming text. (This is exactly what Andre is doing. He loves to gum the corner of the books. I think he finds his books yummy!)
Between 6 and 12 months, your child is beginning to understand that pictures represent objects, and most likely will develop preferences for certain pictures, pages, or even entire stories. Your baby will respond while you read, grabbing for the book and making sounds, and by 12 months will turn pages (with some help from you), pat or start to point to objects on a page, and repeat your sounds.
When and How to Read
Here's a great thing about reading aloud: It doesn't take special skills or equipment, just you, your baby, and some books. Read aloud for a few minutes at a time, but do it often. Don't worry about finishing entire books — focus on pages that you and your baby enjoy. Try to set aside time to read every day — perhaps before naptime and bedtime. In addition to the pleasure that cuddling your baby before bed gives both of you, you'll also be making life easier by establishing a routine. This will help to calm your baby and set expectations about when it's time to sleep. It's also good to read at other points in the day. Choose times when your baby is dry, fed, and alert. Books also come in handy when you're stuck waiting, so have some in the diaper bag to fill time sitting at the doctor's office or standing in line at the grocery store.

Here are some additional reading tips:
Cuddling while you read helps your baby feel safe, warm, and connected to you.
Read with expression, pitching your voice higher or lower where it's appropriate or using different voices for different characters.
Don't worry about following the text exactly. Stop once in a while and ask questions or make comments on the pictures or text. ("Where's the kitty? There he is! What a cute black kitty.") Your child might not be able to respond yet, but this lays the groundwork for doing so later on.
Sing nursery rhymes, make funny animal sounds, or bounce your baby on your knee — anything that shows that reading is fun.
Babies love — and learn from — repetition, so don't be afraid of reading the same books over and over. When you do so, repeat the same emphasis each time as you would with a familiar song.
As your baby gets older, encourage him or her to touch the book or hold sturdier vinyl, cloth, or board books. You don't want to encourage chewing on books, but by putting them in his or her mouth, your baby is learning about them, finding out how books feel and taste — and discovering that they're not edible!
What to Read
Books for babies should have simple, repetitive text and clear pictures. During the first few months of life, your child just likes to hear your voice, so you can read almost anything, especially books with a sing-song or rhyming text. As your baby gets more interested in looking at things, choose books with simple pictures against solid backgrounds.
Once your baby begins to grab, read vinyl or cloth books with faces, bright colors, and shapes. When your baby begins to respond to what's inside of books, add board books with pictures of babies or familiar objects like toys. When your child begins to do things like sit up in the bathtub or eat finger foods, find simple stories about daily routines like bedtime or bathtime. When talking starts, choose books that invite babies to repeat simple words or phrases.
Books with mirrors and different textures (crinkly, soft, scratchy) are also great for this age group, as are fold-out books that can be propped up, or books with flaps that open for a surprise. Board books make page turning easier for infants and vinyl or cloth books can go everywhere — even the tub. Babies of any age like photo albums with pictures of people they know and love. And every baby should have a collection of nursery rhymes!
One of the best ways you can ensure that your little one grows up to be a reader is to have books around your house. When your baby is old enough to crawl over to a basket of toys and pick one out, make sure some books are included in the mix.
In addition to the books you own, take advantage of those you can borrow from the library. Many libraries have storytime just for babies, too. Don't forget to pick up a book for yourself while you're there. Reading for pleasure is another way you can be your baby's reading role model.
One sidenote: Much as i like to go to the library to borrow books for Andre, I realized they are not one of the most hygenic stuff around. Cos if Andre likes to gum the books, I'm pretty sure other babies would too. I was at Sengkang library browsing through the books when i found my hand covered in sticky drool left behind by the previous kid. EWWwwwww. Since then, I've been very conscious not to let Andre put the books into his mouth. And whenever, i find a cheap lobang for books, i'll rather purchase.

6 Months: Prayer of St Francis

PRAYER OF ST FRANCIS

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord
And where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Chorus:
Oh, Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace
Where there's despair in life,
let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there's sadness, ever joy.

Make me a channel of your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
In giving to all men that we receive
And in dying that we're born to eternal life.

5 Months: Hair Cut

Po po brought Andre for a haircut today. Wished she had informed me so that i can take pictures. Oh well, what's the point of saying now. Anyway, it's $5, and i thought it's not too bad. At least those messy tuffs at the sides are gone now. And of cos, Andre looks as handsome as ever... Wahaha (what a hao lian mother)

What's with this phone man. It's not even tasty.
And it does not even makes any noise when i shake it.

Ah ... must press..
